Michael Foster was born in Birmingham 14th March 1963 and was educated at Great Wyrley High School, near Cannock in Staffordshire until 1981. After graduating with a degree in economics, he joined Jaguar Cars Ltd where he worked as a management accountant until 1991.That year he qualified as an Associate Member of the chartered Institute of Management Accountants, following four years at night school in local FE colleges.
He left Jaguar in 1991 to become a Lecturer in Accountancy and Finance at Worcester College of Technology. He specialised in management accountancy, but also taught economics and statistics. In 1994, he completed his Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Further and Higher Education) at the University of Wolverhampton. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary Masters degree from the University of Worcester for his contribution to education in the City of Worcester.
Michael was elected as Worcester's first ever Labour MP on May 1st 1997, with a majority of 7,425 votes. He was re-elected in June 2001 with a majority of 5,766 over the Conservatives and again in May 2005 by the narrow margin of 3,144 votes.
Michael is married to Shauna and they have three children; Katie, Lucy and Mark. He has a keen interest in sport, particularly cricket, football and skiing. He plays for both the House of Commons cricket and football teams. He is a lifelong supporter of Birmingham City FC, but regularly watches his local team Worcester City. He is a member of Worcestershire County Cricket Club
